What The Law Says

Quick terminology check: "rego" is technically your vehicle licence, not your registration. The difference matters when you claim a refund. Our car selling and scrapping glossary explains this and other common mix-ups.

• You can sell any vehicle, registered or not, WoF current or not
• You can transfer ownership without current rego
• You cannot drive an unregistered or unwarranted vehicle
• The new owner must tow or trailer it

The NZTA Notice of Disposal

When you sell to a wrecker, the legal step is the notice of disposal. The moment we submit it: vehicle removed from your name; no future liability for infringements or rego; you can claim rego refund (if applicable). We complete this on the spot. You just show ID.

Will I Get Less Cash?

Surprisingly — no. Cash for cars buyers don't care about WoF or rego status because we're not putting the vehicle back on the road. We're dismantling or recycling it. WoF expired yesterday vs 5 years ago: zero difference to your offer.

Rego Refund
